UMES BATS GO QUIET IN MEAC LOSS TO NORFOLK STATE

Final Stats

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team rounded out its series with Norfolk State on Sunday and the Hawks were defeated by the Spartans, 15-1. The decision gives NSU the sweep of the series as the Hawks have now lost their last four Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference games.

Senior Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) failed to reach base for the first time in the past 27 games, a span that dated back to April 2. He was 0-for-4 in the contest. Senior Stephen Bull (Waldorf, Md.) saw the same streak end yesterday at 33 games. Bull is 11 hits shy of the single-season hits record at UMES as a seventh inning double moved him closer to the record of 70. Campbell has 58 hits on the year, one less than Bull's 59.

The game was scoreless through one, but Norfolk State (18-24, 14-10 MEAC) would strike first blood with a pair of runs in the second. Justin Lee doubled home Robert Reaume and Ross Cardwell to give the Spartans the 2-0 advantage.

UMES (13-28, 8-13 MEAC) shortened its deficit with a run in its next bat after sophomore Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.) singled home freshman Troy Anderson (Bridgeport, W.Va.), who had earlier walked. The Hawks looked to add a couple more runs in the inning but Spartan starter Josh Vales bared down to thwart the UMES rally.

Norfolk State upped its lead to six, 7-1, with four runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

The blitz of runs chased UMES starter Chipper Smith (Florence, S.C.) from the game in the fourth as sophomore Jordan Bone (Pittston, Pa.) came on in relief. Smith finished the day allowing six runs in 3.1 innings with nine hits and one walk. Bone went two innings in relief and was followed by senior Bernard Parker (Waldorf, Md.).

Parker threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and the Hawks finished off the game with junior Michael Epps (Pottstown, Pa.) and sophomore James DiBuo (Bishopville, Md.).

UMES posted just four hits on the day with tallies from Escanilla, Bull, senior Jeffrey Fleetwood (Delmar, Del.) and sophomore Connor Breslin (Saylorsburg, Pa.). Anderson scored the lone run and UMES made four errors altogether.

Norfolk State had 12 players hit safely, four of which had multi-hit games. Zach Markel led the way with a 2-for-3 performance with three RBI. NSU had five extra-base hits and combined to throw five pitchers. Vales (2-5) took the win after going five innings with two hits and five strikeouts.

The Hawks will take a few days off before hosting Delaware State for a doubleheader on Friday, May 10 in their final MEAC regular season contests of the year.
