UMES ATHLETICS TOP MOMENT #7: EVANS ACKNOWLEDGED AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Aug. 21, 2014

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) athletics department countdown continues with track & field's Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica) receiving honors at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

In June, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) acknowledged NCAA Division I student-athletes who earned the organization's All-America honors. Evans was recognized by the organization by earning an Honorable Mention nod in two separate events.

She earned the honorable mention for her performances in the 100 and 200 meter dashes at the NCAA Championships. She wrapped up her collegiate career with a 19th place finish in the 100 meter dash and 21st place finish in the 200 meter dash, earning her accolades among the best runners in the nation.

Prior to Eugene, Evans dominated in the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes and made numerous assists in relay races. In the span between March and June, Gayon won five individual races and helped in a relay win.

All of those efforts from the regular season paid off with qualifications to the NCAA Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla. this past May. Of the eight Hawks who attended, Evans was the lone UMES athlete to advance to Eugene after a 12th place finish in the 100 meters and a 9th place finish in the 200 meters.

This summer, Evans ran two races, the 100 and 200 meter dashes, at the Jamaica Athletics Administration Association (JAAA) National Senior Trails. In the 100 meter dash, she placed fifth in the first heat while earning a time of 11.50 seconds. In the 200 meter dash, Evans finished sixth in the final race with a time of 23.68 seconds, both against some of the best runners in the world.
