Aug. 8, 2014 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Since its earliest days as the Delaware Conference Academy, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore has enjoyed 128 years of rich history and tradition. Athletics has been no stranger to this history with multiple conference championships, the first HBCU to reach and win in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT), and seven national titles to its credit. In honor of these accomplishments, the UMES Athletic Department has released a comprehensive history in two sports.
Soarin' thru the Years details the successes of the school's football program. Inside the 10-page booklet are all wins and losses from 1946 until 1979 and records against opponents, team performance highs, and top individual performances from 1958 to 1978, according to the best data available. Also included are games played before 1946 that have been recorded in online databases. These records were found in university documents, the NCAA Career Statistics website and the College Football Data Warehouse. The History of UMES football can be found here: http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/mdes/genrel/auto_pdf/2014-15/misc_non_event/UMESfb.pdf
The History of UMES Basketball is the equivalent of Soarin' thru the Years for the men's basketball program. The 14-page document includes a full list of games played from 1977 to the present and partial results from 1947 to 1976. Coaching records, individual records, all-conference selections can also be found within its pages. This document can be found here: http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/mdes/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/2014-15/misc_non_event/MBBRecord.pdf
A full-scale history of athletics that includes all sports as well as narration that provides a synopsis of the actions of Hawk athletes throughout the past century will be released in the next couple of months. The PDFs can also be found at www.umeshawks.com under the Hall of Fame tab of the left side of the homepage. Any person who spots potential errors in the documents, as well as games and records not yet included are encouraged to email Matt McCann at mcmccann@umes.edu.
