Game Notes

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team will attempt to get back in the win column as they visit Bethune-Cookman University on Saturday. UMES (10-10, 3-2) hopes to rebound after a tough overtime loss to South Carolina State last Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Moore Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon in Daytona Beach, Fla.

On Monday, the Hawks suffered a difficult defeat on a wild shot in overtime. South Carolina State freshman Edward Stephens drained a 25-foot three-pointer with 2.3 seconds left in the extra period to give the Bulldogs a 73-72 win. Five Hawks scored in double digits, but it was not enough as UMES lost a late lead in both regulation and overtime. Key free throw misses doomed the Hawks, who shot 15-for-28 (53.6%) as a team from the foul line, well below their season average.

In the week leading up to the Florida road trip, Mike Myers (Camden, N.J.) continued to receive recognition for his fantastic season. The senior was among 40 players on the Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List, given out to the nation's top mid-major player of the year. Myers is currently leading the team in scoring at 15.1 points per game and rebounding at 6.8 boards per game.

UMES currently stands in sixth place in the MEAC standings at 3-2 with a couple of road games against the Florida schools over the weekend. The Hawks have been very impressive away from Princess Anne this season, notching six road wins this season. UMES had just one road win last year at Coppin State, which ended a two-year drought for road wins. Since then, the Hawks have completely turned the tables with only five Division I teams notching more road wins so far this year.

Bethune-Cookman comes into Saturday's contest with a 6-13 overall record, and a 2-3 mark in conference play. Brandon Stewart, a senior guard for the Wildcats, has been a fascinating story recently for Bethune-Cookman. The Miami native is a walk-on at Bethune-Cookman, yet he is currently second on the team in scoring at 13.4 points per game.

The Wildcats lead the all-time series against UMES, 47 to 21. Bethune-Cookman has won four straight matchups with the Hawks, including a 69-63 victory last season in Daytona Beach, Fla. The last Hawks win in the series came back on February 15, 2010. Meanwhile, the Hawks should be well-prepared for Bethune-Cookman in terms of scouting. UMES associate head coach Cliff Reed was head coach for Bethune-Cookman, his alma mater, from 2001 to 2011. Current Wildcats coach Gravelle Craig served as an assistant under Reed from 2004 to 2011, before taking over as head coach.

Hawks fans can listen live to coverage on the Hawks Radio Network, powered by SFMSports.net and Fox Sports 960 AM in Salisbury, Md. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's basketball game between the two schools.
