UMES TO DEFEND HOME COURT VS. COPPIN STATE

Jan. 30, 2015

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team will try for their third straight victory as they host the Coppin State Eagles on Saturday afternoon. UMES (12-10, 5-2) aims to maintain its third place standing in the MEAC with a home game against their in-state rival. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at William P. Hytche Athletic Center in Princess Anne, Md.

With a win at Florida A&M on Monday, UMES completed a rare road sweep of the two MEAC schools in the state of Florida. For the Hawks, it was the first Sunshine State sweep since the 2000-01 season with wins both at Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M. Both games played out similarly, with the Hawks establishing an advantage in the first half and withstanding a late push by their opponents.

Mike Myers (Camden, N.J.) has played a bruising style all season, with new extremes in the previous two games. Myers is second in the nation with 193 free throw attempts in 22 games, behind only Jerome Hill of Gardner Webb. In the two most recent games, Myers attempted a combined 33 free throws, going 10-of-18 at Florida A&M on Monday. By outlasting the winless Rattlers, the Hawks improved to 5-2 and third place in the MEAC as Delaware State lost a nail-biter to North Carolina Central.

Myers is fifth in the MEAC in scoring at 15.6 points per game, while shooting 60.9% from the floor, third-best in the conference. With the inside presence of Myers, the outside shooting has flourished for the Hawks. UMES shoots 36.2% percent as a team from the three-point line, second-best in the league. The trio of Devin Martin (40.4%), Ryan Andino (39.4%) and Devon Walker (37.4%) have led the barrage from long range. All three shooters rank in the top seven among MEAC players in terms of three-point accuracy.

Coppin State (3-17, 2-5) enters Saturday's matchup in a tie for ninth place in the MEAC standings along with Bethune-Cookman. The Eagles are led by first-year head coach Michael Grant, who succeeded the legendary Ron "Fang" Mitchell. Mitchell stepped down from Coppin State after last season, ending his 28-year tenure at the Baltimore university. While the Eagles have just three wins on the season, they have played much better recently. Coppin State has won two of its last three games with the lone defeat being a two-point loss at league leaders, North Carolina Central.

Last year, the two schools split the season series with both teams stealing a road win on their rivals' home court. Coppin State won in Princess Anne, 58-50 back in February. UMES returned the favor with a 68-67 win in Baltimore, thanks to two free throws in the final seconds by Troy Snyder. The Hawks have not won two straight meetings against their rival from the Charm City since UMES won all three head-to-head matchups against Coppin State during the 2009-10 season.

Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at W.P. Hytche Athletic Center in Princess Anne, Md. following the conclusion of the women's basketball game. Hawks fans can listen live to all of the UMES basketball coverage on the Hawks Radio Network, powered by SFMSports.net and Fox Sports 960 AM in Salisbury, Md. Doug Newton and Dave Byrd will have the call for both games of the doubleheader.
