Oct. 19, 2015 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- For the first time this year, fans were introduced to the 2015-16 men's and women's basketball teams at the sixth annual Hawk Hysteria. Before a packed crowd, the 2015 MEAC's Man and Woman of the Year awards were presented and the court was dedicated to Jesse T. Williams Sr. a loyal alumnus, Hall of Famer and benefactor.
The night featured several different dance teams that performed and a quick step show from the PanHellenic Council. Harry T. Hawk celebrated his eighth birthday with several friends including The Hardee's Star, The Chic-Fil-A Cow and Wor-Wic Community College's Dolphin.
The volleyball team began the action with a 3-0 victory over Delaware State University. The women were led by
Alana Polk (Houston, Texas) with nine kills and three blocks, while
Zuzana Ondruskova (Bilovec, Czech Republic) also had nine kills, two block assists and five digs on defense.
A three-point shoot-out contest included two players each from the men's and women's team that began the night of competition between the teams. A skills challenged followed featuring three members each of the men's and women's basketball team, where the men barely beat out the women in the timed competition. Following the skills challenge, both basketball teams were each introduced one-by-one and participated in running clock scrimmages.
The women's basketball game featured great play from
Chalyse Taylor (Chester, Va.),
Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand),
Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) and
Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass).
For the men,
Dominique Elliott (Savannah, Ga.),
Devin Martin (Baltimore, Md.), and
Derrico Peck (Atlanta, Ga.) all amazed the crowd with spectacular dunks and
Ryan Andino (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) drained several three-pointers.
The men's basketball team will open up its season at Kansas State Friday, Nov. 13 at 8:00 p.m. The women will start their season with an exhibition game against Wesley on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 6:00 p.m. and then their regular season will start against Georgetown also on Nov. 13 at 6:00 p.m. in Princess Anne, Md.
