MEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Monday (Dec. 21), guards Devin Martin (Baltimore) and Dontae Caldwell (Los Angeles) were named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) Athletes of the Week for their performances against American and Old Dominion. Both Hawks set career highs as Martin tallied 34 points versus American while Caldwell registered 23 points against the Monarchs.
Later that evening, Caldwell took home Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week.
The next night (Dec. 22), the Hawks defeated Central Penn, 115-86, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. Martin recorded a double-double with a new career-high 37 points and 10 boards in the victory.
After the short Christmas break, UMES begins a four-game road swing against St. Joseph's (Dec. 29), UMBC (Dec. 31), Pittsburgh (Jan. 2) and Columbia (Jan. 6).
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
On Dec. 22, the women's basketball fell to the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs, 69-52, inside the Hytche Center. Senior center Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) registered her first double-double of the season, finishing with a career-high 15 points and a season-high 11 boards.
Maryland Eastern Shore hits the road for their final tune-up before resuming conference play as they head back to Greensboro, N.C. to face UNC-Greensboro today. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
TRACK & FIELD (INDOOR)
Recently, Coach Ernest Barrett and the Hawks announced a schedule change as the squad will head to Staten Island, N.Y. and the Ocean Breeze complex to compete in the Villanova Open on Friday, Jan. 8.
The meet replaces the Navy Invitational, scheduled for the same day. Time is still listed as TBA for the Villanova Open.
VOLLEYBALL
Recently, Coach Toby Rens immediately bolstered their team within the first month of their offseason with the signing of two players from the Windy City: Asiah Dennis and Gbemisola Okesanjo. Though they went to different prep schools, both Dennis and Okesanjo competed together as teammates on the Chicago Elite Volleyball Club.
The team doubled its win total from a year ago, finishing the 2015 campaign with a 22-7 record.
