HAWKS BASEBALL WASHED OVER BY CRIMSON TIDE

Feb. 14, 2015

Box Score

HOOVER, Ala. - Fresh off an opening night loss that ended up with many positives, the Hawks baseball team found successes in game two more difficult to find. In the end, the Crimson Tide led wire-to-wire in an 11-0 defeat of the Hawks on a sunny, spring-like afternoon in central Alabama. The loss drops UMES to 0-2 on the young season.

Senior Jordan Bone (Pittston, Pa.) was on the hill for the Hawks, and the Crimson Tide ramped up the pressure from the first pitch. A walk, stolen base and error got the leadoff man to third and All-American candidate Mikey White drove him home with an RBI single. He would come around to score as well and the Hawks were down 2-0.

Bone would eventually settle down to throw a pair of scoreless frames and strike out four batters, and it appeared that UMES would hold the line against Alabama for a second straight game. Unfortunately the fourth inning favored the Tide who scored four runs and led 6-0 before the Hawks could finish the inning. Runs would be added in the sixth and seventh inning to complete the scoring.

Despite the defeat, a couple of Hawks found cracks in the Tide's wall. Freshmen Grayson Trower (Chesterfield, Va.) and Quenton Hamrick (New Castle, Del.) both singled in the contest, collecting their first collegiate hits. Another freshman in pitcher Toby Hoskins (North East, Md.) relieved Bone for his collegiate debut, and he impressed by striking out two batters over 2 2/3 innings.

Two veteran pitchers managed to prevent further Crimson Tide runs late in the game, with junior Will Turley (Greensboro, Md.) putting up a scoreless eighth and senior Michael Epps (Pottstown, Pa.) stranding the bases loaded for a scoreless ninth.

For the Tide, sophomore outfielder Casey Hughston led the charge offensively, going 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Kyle Overstreet aided the Tide's rallies with three RBIs. Junior Will Carter, making his debut as an Alabama player, set the pace on the mound with seven scoreless innings.

The Hawks will get a third attempt to earn a victory before coming back to the Shore, and they will have junior Tanner Whiteman (Cazenovia, N.Y.) making his Hawks debut. Alabama will counter with sophomore Geoffrey Bramblett. Game time is scheduled by 2:05 p.m. Eastern time.
