Box Score v. USC-Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - On their final day at the Spartan Invitational, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team dropped both contests to the Bryant Bulldogs and the USC-Upstate Spartans, respectively. With the setbacks, the Lady Hawks fell to 0-6 overall.

In the first game, UMES manufactured six runs on five hits. Junior Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) and freshman Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) led the Hawk attack as both each recorded two RBIs. Hitch also notched her first multi-hit game on the season, going 2-of-3 from the plate.

UMES took the early advantage after a two-RBI single from Casarez drove in Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.) and Tesharra Hill (Chatsworth, Calif.), 2-0. Bryant answered with a two-run shot by Elle Madsen and tied the contest, 2-2. In the second, the Bulldogs scored another two runs to take the lead, 4-2. Maryland Eastern Shore responded with a four-run rally, capped by Hitch's two-RBI single to leftfield, 6-4. In the bottom third, Bryant launched several balls into the stands to regain the lead, 16-6. UMES was unable to slow down the Bulldogs as they tallied three more in the fourth after another long ball from Madsen to win, 19-6.

For the Bulldogs, Madsen and Hayley Bottino each registered a game-high three hits. Also, the two ladies combined for nine RBIs in the win.

In game two, the Lady Hawks tallied only two hits versus the Spartans. Hitch and Casarez each recorded a hit.

USC-Upstate came out strong as they scored five runs in the first, sparked by homers from Karla Beasley and Dana Landers, 5-0. In the second, the Spartans' Shellie Robinson drilled a two-run shot over the centerfield fence to extend the lead, 7-0. USC-Upstate managed to put up another run in the third and won by the final score 8-0.

For the Spartans, Robinson and Beasley each posted two hits and two RBIs. Furthermore, Cheyenne Griffin also notched two RBIs in the victory.

On Feb. 27-28, the Lady Hawks head to Rock Hill, S.C. to compete in the Winthrop Adidas Tournament. On Friday (02/27), the squad will take on Wagner (3 p.m.) and Hartford (5 p.m.). The next day (02/28), UMES meets Austin Peay (11 a.m.) and Harvard (5 p.m.).
