BUIES CREEK, N.C. - In the final day of the Campbell/Hampton Inn Invitational, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team lost to the St. John's Red Storm, 7-2. With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 0-3 overall while St. John's moved to 3-1 on the season.

For most of the game, the contest was a pitching duel between UMES' Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) and St. John's McKenzie Murray. Both hurlers gave up a combine three runs in the first three innings of the game.

Junior Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) opened the game with a lead-off walk, followed by a single from Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.). With one away and runners on the corners, freshman Tesharra Hill (Chatsworth, Calif.) grounded out to first, but drove in Gomez for the first score of the contest, 1-0. Next, Anderson scored on a wild pitch and gave UMES a 2-0 advantage. In the Red Storm's first at-bat, they manufactured a run to trim the margin in half, 2-1.

Both clubs were scoreless in the second and third, but the Red Storm broke through in the fourth. St. John's scored two runs to take their first lead of the game, 3-2. In the next inning, the Red Storm's bats remained hot as they tallied four more runs to take a five-run lead after five innings of work to win, 7-2. UMES continued to battle, but they were unable to get into an offensive rhythm as they were held to four hits total.

For St. John's, Lauren Zick went 3-of-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Brittany Garcia and Savannah Warren each produced two hits in the victory.

Maryland Eastern Shore will take nearly two weeks off until their next game. On Feb. 20-21, UMES goes to Spartanburg, S.C. where they will compete in the Spartan Invitational, hosted by USC-Upstate.
