BUIES CREEK, N.C. - In their second day at the Campbell/Hampton Inn Invitational, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team fell to the Presbyterian Blue Hose, 12-2. With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 0-2 overall while Presbyterian improved to 2-1 on the season.

Junior Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) was the lone Lady Hawks to record a multi-hit game. The New Jersey-native went a perfect 2-of-2 with a walk. Senior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) notched her first hit of the season, going 1-of-3 with a RBI and run scored.

Maryland Eastern Shore jumped out to a hot start. Gomez led off with a double down the leftfield line to put the Lady Hawks in scoring position. Next, Gomez advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs and a runner on third, King doubled up-the-middle to drive in Gomez and gave UMES the early lead, 1-0. Next at-bat, freshman Tesharra Hill (Chatsworth, Calif.) singled to leftfield, bringing home King and giving the Lady Hawks a 2-0 advantage.

In their first at-bat, the Blue Hose scored five runs, including a three-run blast by Shelby Petik. After the first inning, the Lady Hawks trailed, 5-2. In the third, Presbyterian picked up another run on a RBI-single from Kersten Legacki. Entering the fourth, UMES was down, 6-2, until the Blue Hose tallied six more runs to extend their lead, 12-2, which eventually became the final score in five innings.

Presbyterian recorded 11 hits, led by Legacki and Hope Rogers. Both ladies had three hits each while Petik registered a game-high four RBIs in the victory.

Similar to yesterday's frost delay, the Lady Hawks had to make an adjustment to their schedule again. Tomorrow (02/08), Maryland Eastern Shore will face the St. John's Red Storm at 10 a.m. Furthermore, tomorrow's matchup against Campbell has been canceled and will not be rescheduled.
