GREENSBORO, N.C.- Nearly three weeks away from the diamond due to inclement weather, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team dropped to the Drexel Dragon, 14-2, at the North Carolina A&T (NCAT) Gold & Blue Tournament.
With the setback, the Lady Hawks fell to 0-7 overall while Drexel moved to 5-5 on the season.
Five UMES players manufactured a hit in the contest, led by senior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.). King went 1-of-2 with a double and two RBIs.
Trailing, 2-0, junior Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) began with a double to give UMES a run in scoring position. Then, Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) singled to right field to put runners on the corners. Next, freshman Tesharra Hill (Chatsworth, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs, King doubled to leftfield and drove home Anderson and Hill to tie the contest, 2-2.
In the second, Drexel scored three runs and reclaimed the lead, 5-2. After a scoreless third, the Dragons bats got hot as they tallied seven runs to take a 12-2 advantage after four innings of play. Drexel added two more runs in the fifth to win, 14-2.
For the Dragons, they posted 14 runs on 12 hits, led by Leticia Matsuoka. Matsuoka went a perfect 4-of-4 with six RBIs and two runs scored in the victory.
Tomorrow (03/14), the Lady Hawks take on tournament host NCAT. First-pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
