GREENSBORO, N.C.- In the second day of the North Carolina A&T (NCAT) Blue & Gold Tournament, the host team rallied late in the seventh to down the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team, 5-4. With the setback, the Lady Hawks fell to 0-8 on the season while the Aggies improved to 5-12 overall. Both squads meet each other tomorrow. First-pitch at 2 p.m.
Maryland Eastern Shore's bat came alive throughout the day. The club tallied 10 hits, led by newcomer Tesharra Hill (Chatsworth, Calif.). The California-native went 2-of-3 from the plate with a double. Despite the hot bats, the Lady Hawks only managed four runs as they stranded 13 runners.
UMES got on the board first, thanks to a sac fly from Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.), 1-0. After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Hawks registered another run in third and took a 2-0 advantage.
In the fifth, junior Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) singled to centerfield and drove home sophomore Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.). UMES was in control, 3-0, but the Aggies would respond.
In the bottom fifth, NCAT rallied four runs to take their first lead of the contest, 4-3. Maryland Eastern Shore responded with an answer of their own.
Senior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) singled to leftfield to put the tying run on base. With one away, Hill singled and the Lady Hawks had runners on the corners. After Hill stole second, Schnyder walked to load the bases. Next at-bat, Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) singled to leftfield and tied the contest, 4-4, after six innings of play.
UMES went scoreless in the seventh, but the Aggies' Raven Gray scored the game-winning run to down the Lady Hawks, 5-4.
For the Aggies, Gray went a perfect 4-of-4 from the plate with two runs scored. Alejandra Barcenas went 2-of-4 in the victory.
