March 17, 2015 UMES v. Savannah State Box Score (Game 1)
SAVANNAH, Ga.- After consecutive tough losses to North Carolina A&T, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team split a pair of games against the Savannah State (SSU) Lady Tigers. SSU took the first contest, 12-2, but the Lady Hawks won the slugfest in the second, 12-9.
As a result, UMES moved to 1-10 overall whereas the Lady Tigers went to 7-12 on the season.
In the second game, the Lady Hawks notched a season-high 17 hits and nine UMES players recorded a hit. Junior Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) had a career day, posting career highs in hits (4), RBIs (5), and runs scored (3). Fellow junior Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.) also registered a career-high with three hits in the victory.
Sophomore Alexis Hudson (Laurel, Del.) opened the contest with a lead-off walk, followed by a stolen base. Next at-bat, Gomez homered into the right field stands and gave UMES the upper-hand after one, 2-0.
Both squads went scoreless in the second, but the third saw an offensive outburst. For the Lady Hawks, they manufactured five more runs, including a three-run RBI-single by Gomez. Maryland Eastern Shore was in control, 7-0, but the Lady Tigers answered.
Savannah State scored six runs in the bottom third, capped off by a three-run blast from Antonette Smith, 7-6. The third inning alone saw 11 runs on seven hits.
After a scoreless fourth, the Lady Hawks managed two more runs in the fifth to extend the lead, 9-6, but SSU responded two runs of their own, 9-8. In the sixth, Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) singled to right field and drove home Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.), giving UMES a two-run advantage, 10-8. Abria Tinsley (Sewell, N.J.) came up big with a two-run RBI single in the seventh to increase the margin, 12-8. Savannah State made a late rally, but not enough as UMES prevailed, 12-9.
For SSU, Brianna Harris and Kylie Tierce each had two hits in the second contest. Also, Smith recorded a team-high three RBIs in the loss.
In the first contest, Nash and senior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) each recorded two hits against the Lady Tigers. Hudson registered a RBI in a losing effort.
Savannah State pounced on the Lady Hawks in the opening inning, tallying six runs. SSU's Torrian Wright, reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Year, and Tierce homered in the inning. Despite the early deficit, UMES battled back in the second.
Nash began the inning with a single, followed by another single from Tesharra Hill (Chatsworth, Calif.) through the right side. Freshman Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases. With one away, Princess Davis (Frederick, Md.) reached on a fielder's choice; thus, bringing home Nash, 6-1. Then, Hudson grounded out to short, but drove in UMES' second run of the inning, 6-2.
After back-to-back scoreless innings in the third and fourth, the Lady Tigers had another big rally. Savannah State manufactured six more runs in the fifth to win, 12-2.
For the Lady Tigers, Wright and Smith each posted three RBIs in the first game. Furthermore, five Savannah State players scored twice in the victory.
Tomorrow (03/18), the Lady Hawks travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to take on the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs in a doubleheader. The action begins at 1 p.m.
