March 18, 2015

UMES v. South Carolina State Box Score (Game 1)

ORANGEBURG, S.C.- Similar to yesterday's outcome against Savannah State, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team split with the South Carolina State (SC State) Lady Bulldogs. The squad dropped the first game, 9-0, but rallied in the second contest to win, 8-6.

As a result, the Lady Hawks moved to 2-11 overall whereas SC State went to 5-9 on the season. Next month (04/16), both clubs will meet in Princess Anne for another doubleheader.

In game two, the Lady Hawks tallied eight runs on 10 hits. Junior Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.), Alexis Hudson (Laurel, Del.), and Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) each recorded two hits in the contest. Furthermore, Hitch tossed her first complete game this season. The Delaware-product went 7.0 innings and scattered four hits in the victory.

After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Bulldogs capitalized on multiple UMES errors. In the second, South Carolina State scored four runs to take an early advantage, 4-0. In the next inning, Maryland Eastern Shore cut the deficit in half with Gomez's RBI-double and Hudson's RBI-single, 4-2. In the bottom fourth, SC State extended the lead back to four runs after a two-run blast by Jasmine Harris, 6-2.

Newcomer Princess Davis (Frederick, Md.) began the fifth with a single and then swiped second base to put a runner in scoring position. Then, Gomez singled and placed runners on the corners. Next, Hudson singled to right center to score Davis, 6-3. With bases loaded and one out, junior Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.) walked and trimmed the margin down to two runs, 6-4.

South Carolina State made a pitching change in the same inning; however, another Lady Hawk run crossed home after a passed ball, 6-5. With runners on second and third, senior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) delivered a RBI double and tied the contest, 6-6. Next at-bat, Hitch singled down the leftfield line and drove home two more runs. In a matter of moments, UMES manufactured six runs on five hits and took the lead after five innings of play, 8-6.

In the sixth and seventh, Hitch shutdown the Lady Bulldogs' attack and picked up her first win on the season.

For SC State, Harris had a game-high four RBIs in a losing effort.

In the first contest, UMES produced only two hits. Hudson and Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.) were the lone Lady Hawks to register a hit in the loss.

After one, Maryland Eastern Shore trailed, 1-0. In the second, the Lady Bulldogs posted four runs to increase their lead, 5-0. Next inning, South Carolina State added three more runs and made it an 8-0 advantage. SC State tagged on another run in the fourth to make the final score, 9-0.

For the Lady Bulldogs, they scored nine runs on nine hits. Harris went a perfect 3-of-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the win.
