WASHINGTON- In the rubber match, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team could not keep up with the Howard (HU) Lady Bison as they fell, 8-3, at the Washington Nationals Junior Park. With the loss, UMES dropped to 3-15 (1-2 MEAC) whereas HU moved to 8-18 (2-1 MEAC).
Similar to their game two victory, the Lady Hawks capitalized on opportunities when they presented themselves. Maryland Eastern Shore registered six hits, led by juniors Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) and Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.). Both ladies went 2-of-3 from the plate. Furthermore, Gomez also had a season-high three stolen bases in the loss.
UMES struck first with a RBI-single by Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.), but a sac fly from Howard's Dominique Lawrence tied the contest after one inning of play, 1-1. In the second, HU added two more runs to take a 3-1 lead. Maryland Eastern Shore's Alexis Hudson (Laurel, Del.) trimmed the margin with a RBI-single down the leftfield line in the third inning, 3-2.
Howard's offensive attack continued as they tabbed two additional runs, led by a solo shot from Milan Poindexter, 5-2. UMES battled back with a run in the fourth, thanks to a wild pitch, 5-3. Despite the Lady Hawks refusal to give up, HU was too much as they tallied a run in the next three innings to win, 8-3.
For the Lady Bison, they recorded eight runs on 14 hits. Imani Ballard had a game-high three hits while four other Howard players posted two hits in the victory.
On March 25, Maryland Eastern Shore heads to Baltimore to face the UMBC Retrievers in a nonconference doubleheader. First-pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
