PRINCESS ANNE, Md.  -- A day after both squads combined for 40 runs in two games, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team could not keep up with the Coppin State (CSU) Eagles as they lost, 12-4, at Hawks Field. As a result, CSU secured a season sweep over the Lady Hawks.

With the loss, Maryland Eastern Shore fell to 3-20 (1-5 MEAC) whereas the Eagles improved to 3-14 (3-0 MEAC) on the season.

For UMES, they could not duplicate the same results from yesterday as the club was held to five total hits. The first four in order; Alexis Hudson (Laurel, Del.), Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.), Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.), and Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) each registered a hit while starting pitcher Abria Tinsley (Sewell, N.J.) collect one in the ninth spot.

Coppin State took the early lead in the first after UMES' miscue, 1-0. After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Hawks got into a rhythm offensively.

Tinsley gave the Lady Hawks a lead-off single into centerfield. Then, she reached second on a passed ball to put a runner in scoring position. Next at-bat, Hudson bunt-singled and placed runners on the corners. Hudson's speed created problems as she stole second and gave Tinsley an opportunity to swipe home; thus, tying the contest, 1-1. With one away and a runner on third, Guerra grounded out to short, but drove in Hudson to give UMES their first lead of the game, 2-1.

In the fourth, CSU responded with a big inning. Coppin State produced seven runs on five hits, highlighted by a two-run single from Kimberlynn Brown, 8-2. UMES could not slow down the Eagles' power surge as they had another rally in the fifth. CSU added four more runs to the board to take a commanding lead, 12-2. Despite the deficit, Maryland Eastern Shore refused to give up.

Gomez led off the fifth with a single through the right side, followed by a stolen base. Next up, Guerra singled to right field and put runners on the corners. With one out, Nash delivered a single to centerfield and drove in Gomez, 12-3. After CSU's error due to a passed ball, the Lady Hawks were in business with runners on second and third. Junior Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.) grounded out to shortstop, but drove in another run to make the final score, 12-4.

For Coppin State, they recorded 12 runs on 11 hits. A day after hitting for the cycle, Candice Van Horn's hot streak continued as they went a perfect 3-of-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the victory.

On April 3-4, the Lady Hawks travel down to Norfolk, Va. to meet first-place Norfolk State in a three-game series. Friday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. Saturday's single, seven-inning contest begins at noon.
