HAWKS SUCCUMB TO LATE COLONIALS RALLY

April 15, 2015

Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- A tight game between the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks and the George Washington University Colonials went the visitors' way late, as the Atlantic 10 foe from Washington, D.C. seized the contest with a bevy of late inning runs to defeat the Hawks, 10-1. UMES and George Washington ended their head-to-head matchup with each team winning one game.

With both teams eyeing key weekend matchups, the game quickly turned into a battle of the bullpens. Hawks starting freshman Scott Bean (Harveys Lake, Pa.) lasted three innings, giving up two runs in the second, and Colonials starter Jordan Sheinkop pitched two innings of scoreless baseball.

A slew of relievers followed Bean for the Hawks, with some early successes. Sophomore Kameron Raison (Newark, Del.) and senior Michael Epps (Pottstown, Pa.) delivered three combined scoreless innings, allowing two baserunners while striking out two. Meanwhile, the offense had found the scoreboard, with a one-out single from sophomore Justin Dattilo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) that scored junior Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.) to cut the deficit in half.

The Hawks then made a couple rallies in an effort to tie the game. A leadoff baserunner in the fourth was stopped by a double play, and Escanilla made it to third after reaching on an error the next inning, but was stranded there by a strikeout and groundout. Sophomore Skylar Murray (Georgetown, Del.) also led off the sixth with a single, but a pinch runner was picked off at second base later in the frame.

With the score 2-1 in the top of the seventh, the Colonials broke thru the bullpen wall. RBI's from Eli Kashi, Bobby Campbell and Andrew Selby, all on singles, gave George Washington a 5-1 edge. They would put the game out of reach the following inning with a five run charge to round out the scoring.

UMES will try to get back on track with a crucial conference matchup versus the Delaware State Hornets on Saturday and Sunday. A doubleheader begins at noon Saturday, followed by a noon start on Sunday. All games will be played at Hawk Stadium.
