Box Score

DOVER, Del.-- This weekend in softball features rivalry weekend among the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) teams and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team traveled north on route 13 to face the Delaware State (DSU) Lady Hornets. Today's doubleheader saw DSU take both contests. UMES dropped a tough bout in game one, 4-0, and the Lady Hornets won game two, 9-1.

With both setbacks, the Lady Hawks fell to 7-31 (4-13 MEAC) overall while Delaware State improved to 19-21 (13-4 MEAC) on the season.

In game one, UMES was held to only four hits. Junior Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) recorded her 12th multi-hit performance, going 2-of-3 with a double. Fellow juniors Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) and Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.) also added a hit in the loss.

After giving up a sac fly-RBI to the Lady Hornets' Vanessa Washington, freshman pitcher Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) held the conference's top hitting squad in check for majority of the contest. On the other hand, DSU's Tara Tursellino was also dealing as she kept the Hawk attack unbalanced.

Through five innings, Delaware State held a one-run advantage until the bottom six. DSU created separation as they produced three runs to win by the final score 4-0.

For the Lady Hornets', Tursellino tossed a four-hit shutout with three strikeouts in the victory.

In game two, the Lady Hawks manufactured a run on five hits; however, stranded nine baserunners. Hitch notched her second multi-hit game of the season, going 2-of-3 with a double. Freshman Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) went 1-of-2 with a RBI-double and walk in a losing effort.

Delaware State got on the board first after capitalizing on an UMES error, 1-0. In the second, DSU added a run to take an early 2-0 advantage. Next inning, a two-run shot from the Lady Hornets' Jordan Stamps extended the lead, 4-0.

After a scoreless fifth and sixth, the Lady Hawks made a rally. Sophomore Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.) began the rally with a single to right field. Then, Hitch delivered a double to leftfield and put runners on second and third. Next up, Casarez earned a RBI-double and gave UMES life.

Despite battling back, the Lady Hornets' put on an offensive display. DSU manufactured five runs on six hits, capped off by another two-run blast from Stamps. Delaware State was victorious in six, 9-1.

For DSU, they tallied nine runs on 11 hits. Stamps went 2-of-3 with two homers and four RBIs. Washington ended her afternoon going 2-of-2 with two runs scored and a walk.

Tomorrow (05/02), the Lady Hawks conclude its 2015 campaign while looking to avoid a season sweep against Delaware State. First-pitch is set for 1 p.m.
