BASEBALL ENDS REGULAR SEASON ON WRONG END OF SHUTOUT

May 6, 2015

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md.  -- UMES managed just two hits off of a red hot UMBC team as the Retrievers managed to hold the Hawks in check in a 5-0 shutout at Alumni Field in Baltimore Wednesday. The baseball team from Princess Anne still managed to close out the regular season with a 16-31 record, the best for the team since 2006.

Senior starter Jordan Bone (Pittston, Pa.) was given the assignment for UMES but UMBC greeted him with a rude welcome in the second. A single and a double led to a sacrifice that broke the ice, and Kevin Lachance singled in two more runs to put three on the board in the frame.

The Retrievers would grab two more runs in the fourth with a two run shot by outfielder Jake Barnes. For Barnes, the blast was good for his team leading fifth of the season.

Freshmen Scott Bean (Harveys Lake, Pa.) and Chris Melrath (Rising Sun, Md.) relieved Bone after the starter finished four innings. Both kept the Retrievers in line, scattering three hits and two walks over four innings to go along with two strikeouts.

However, the home starter, Kevin Ladner, was masterful as he gave up just one hit and two walks in seven innings. Mark Esposito finished the job with two innings of scoreless ball.

Sophomore Justin Dattilo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and junior Connor Breslin (Saylorsburg, Pa.) collected the pair of base hits for the Hawks, both singles.

UMBC was able to extend their win streak to nine games with the victory. This includes an 8-0 win over UMES in a game at Hawk Stadium on April 29th.

The Hawks will now focus their attention to the MEAC tournament, taking place at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury next week. UMES will either face North Carolina Central or Savannah State in a Wednesday matchup beginning at 12:30.
