Volleyball comes from behind to defeat Coppin State

BALTIMORE, Maryland - Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball rallied from a first set defeat, winning the next three in a 3-1 victory (23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19) over the Coppin State Eagles Sunday afternoon in Baltimore. With the win the Hawks improve to 15-12 (8-2 MEAC) and secured at least a tie for second place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division.

Sophomores Lucia Babic (Sisak, Croatia) and Zuzana Ondruskova (Bilovec, Czech Republic) led the attack, tying for a match high 11 kills. Ondruskova also delivered her third double-double of the season with 10 digs. Junior Kirstin Fink (Tucson, Arizona) and sophomore Marta Klafuric (Donja Lomnica, Croatia) impressed on the block with six participations each. Klafuric delivered three solo blocks, while Fink delivered two. As a team the Hawks totaled a season high 14 blocks, compared to four by Coppin State.

"This was a hard fought road win." Coach Toby Rens said after the match. "I'm pleased with the adjustments that we made after the first set. I thought Kirstin, Zuzana, and Lucia really showed today."

Other top performers for the Hawks include 37 assists from freshman Ivana Blazevic (Zagreb, Croatia) and nine digs from sophomore Koya Sowells (Missouri City, Texas).

Coppin State received 10 kills from Jasmine Lougheed and 14 digs from libero Glorines Rosado. The Eagles fell to 2-23 (2-9 MEAC).

One final week awaits the Hawks before MEAC tournament play. The Shore returns to the Hytche Center for a meeting with Norfolk State Friday at 6 p.m. before the regular season finale at Delaware State on Sunday.
