Hawks win fourth straight match with sweep of Coppin

Oct. 9, 2016

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland - Freshman Iva Vujosevic (Bar, Montenegro) led the way with 14 kills, seven digs, two assists, two blocks and an ace as the Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team won their fourth straight match in straight sets (25-15, 25-11, 25-14) over Coppin State Sunday in Princess Anne.

The win improves the Hawks to 11-10 (4-1 MEAC) while the Eagles fall to 1-18 (1-4 MEAC).

Along with Vujosevic's impressive performance, which included a 52 percent success rate on attacks, the Hawks also received exceptional efforts from freshman Ivana Blazevic (Zagreb, Croatia) and her 30 assists with eight digs and a match high five aces. Sophomores Zuzana Ondruskova (Bilovec, Czech Republic) and Koya Sowells (Missouri City, Texas) reached double figures in digs with 14 and 13, respectively.

"This was a great way to finish off our weekend." Hawks coach Toby Rens said after the victory. "Koya, Zuzana, Iva and Ivana played very well in their respective positions. This was evident in our passing, serving and defensive play. Now we are looking forward to a week of preparation and closing out the first half of conference play."

Maryland Eastern Shore converted over 30 percent of their attacks as a team to go with a season high 13 aces. The Hawks also outmatched the Eagles in assists 35-18 and in digs 50-31.

Coppin State received a double-double from Dominique Madarang, who had 15 digs and 14 assists. Guro Froberg led the Eagles with 10 kills.

The Eagles' only leads of the match came in the opening moments of set one. Both teams fought back and forth until the 9-9 mark when Hawks sophomore Marta Klafuric (Donja Lomnica, Croatia) delivered the first of her five kills. That point triggered a five point rally by The Shore to force a Coppin timeout. The two teams traded off points until a Vujosevic kill and two aces from Ondruskova finished off a ten point win in the first set.

Any doubts that the Hawks would take the second set as well were quickly erased with an 8-2 run off the first serve. Aces by Klafuric and Blazevic along with two kills from junior Kirstin Fink (Tucson, Arizona) gave the Hawks an overwhelming advantage. Maryland Eastern Shore led by ten at the 14-4 mark, and used three more Vujosevic kills in a 5-0 run to win the set 25-11.

No mercy was shown in the third set. Three aces in a row by Blazevic helped the Hawks build a 6-1 lead that was too much for the Eagles to overcome. Maryland Eastern Shore rode the hot start to an 11 point victory in set three, 25-14, to win the match 3-0.

The Shore continues their six match home stand Friday with a 6 p.m. match with Route 13 rival Delaware State. The match kicks off Maryland Eastern Shore's Hawk Hysteria festivities.
