Feb. 14, 2016 Box Score (Coppin State) | Box Score (North Carolina A&T State)
GREENSBORO, N.C. - On another frigid day in Greensboro, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team wrapped up the weekend with another spilt at the Aggie Invitational. The club rallied from behind to take down in-state rival Coppin State, 11-6, but fell to North Carolina A&T State (NCAT), 3-1.
Therefore, UMES finished the opening weekend with a 2-2 mark.
Similar to Friday, Maryland Eastern Shore was firing on all cylinders as they produced 11 run on 12 hits. Five Hawks had multi-hit performances, led by junior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) with three dingers. Senior Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) came up clutch as she tied her career-high with five RBIs in the victory.
UMES trailed the Eagles, 3-0, after three innings until they made a rally in the fourth. Maryland Eastern Shore took their first lead of the game after scoring six runs on five hits in the fourth.
Coppin State responded with a run in the fifth, but Gomez's RBI-double in the bottom half helped regain the momentum. Both clubs each recorded two runs in the seventh, but the Lady Hawks would be too much as they won, 11-6.
Senior pitcher Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) earned her first win of the season after six innings of work.
For Coppin State, Melanie Benge guided the Eagles' attack as she went a perfect 4-of-4 from the plate with three RBIs.
Due to darkness, UMES and NCAT were forced to cut the contest to five innings.
Like the last matchup, Maryland Eastern Shore could not get the bats going as they were held to only two hits. Sophomore Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) and freshman Kiana Peterson (Willingboro, N.J.) each picked up a hit while fellow classmate Sara Jo Whaley (Laurel, Del.) generated the squad's lone run on a RBI-fielder's choice.
Scoreless after two innings of play, Casarez singled down the leftfield line and placed junior Ciara Schnyder (Aracadia, Calif.) in scoring position. Next up, Peterson loaded the bases with another single. With two away, Whaley drove in Schnyder on a fielder's choice and gave UMES the early advantage, 1-0. The lead was short-lived as NCAT answered with three runs, capped off by Jillian Nobles' two-run single.
Maryland Eastern Shore tried to put together a rally late, but were unsuccessful as they fell, 3-1.
NCAT's pitching duo of Mohagony Headen and Zadaisha Young-Wadell would make the difference as they held the Hawk attack to a run on two hits.
On Feb. 27-28, the Lady Hawks head to Baltimore where they will take part in the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational. The two-day tournament features UMES, UMBC and Lafayette.
