PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - After two weeks away from the diamond, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team return to action at the UMBC Kickoff Tournament. Due to weather and field conditions, both squads agreed to move the event to Hawks Field.
In game one, Lafayette rallied to knock off the Lady Hawks, 4-3. In the nightcap, Maryland Eastern Shore snapped its three-game skid against UMBC with a 6-2 victory.
Offensively, UMES (3-3) was unable to get into a rhythm as they were held to only four hits. Despite only four dingers, the Lady Hawks made them count as senior outfielder Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) and freshman Kiana Peterson (Willingboro, N.J.) each had extra base hits. Gomez collected a RBI-triple while Peterson earned her first career homer.
After a scoreless first inning, the Leopards manufactured two runs in the second and took the early lead, 2-0.
Bottom third, junior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led off with bunt singled. Then, Gomez delivered a RBI-triple and put Maryland Eastern Shore on the board. Next up, Peterson drilled a two-run shot over centerfield and gave UMES the advantage after three, 3-2.
In the fifth, Lafayette tied the contest on Brooke Wensel's RBI-single, 3-3. The next inning, Rebecca Dvorak provided the go-ahead RBI-single and put the Leopards back on top for good as they won, 4-3.
Lafayette's Kristyn Marinelli picked up the win as she tossed a complete game, going seven innings with six Ks.
In game two, the Lady Hawks produced six runs on nine hits. Peterson and fellow freshman Sara Jo Whaley (Laurel, Del.) led the Hawk attack, recording two RBIs each. Seniors Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.) and Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) each drove in a run as well.
Maryland Eastern Shore struck first after Nash's RBI-single to right field and took a 1-0 lead after one.
Bottom second, UMBC's Jordan Sganga delivered a sac fly and tied the contest, 1-1. After back-to-back scoreless innings in the third and fourth, Bridget O'Malley put the Retrievers ahead after a RBI-single up-the-middle, 2-1.
Top six, the Lady Hawks answered with a big inning. UMES scored three runs and reclaimed the lead after six, 4-2.
Next inning, Whaley provided two insurance runs as she drove in Gomez and MacKenzie Brown (Bayonne, N.J.). Thus, the Lady Hawks would win by the final score, 6-2.
Sophomore pitcher Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) earned her second victory of the season. Despite allowing nine hits, the California native managed to get out of trouble on multiple occasions. She pitched seven innings and struck out five in the win.
Tomorrow (Feb. 28), all three teams will wrap up the weekend at Hawks Field. UMES will face the Leopards at 10:30 a.m. After Lafayette and the Retrievers faceoff, Maryland Eastern Shore and UMBC will meet at 3 p.m.
