PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - On the final day of the UMBC Kickoff Tournament, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team split the twinbill with Lafayette and the Retrievers.
UMES (4-4) defeated the Leopards, 7-6, in extra innings while falling to the Retrievers, 4-0.
In game one, the offense manufactured seven runs on 14 hits with 10 Lady Hawks earning a hit. Senior Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.) led the way, going 3-of-4 with a RBI and run scored. Fellow classmate Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) and junior Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.) each produced two hits and two walks in the victory.
Scoreless after the first inning, the Lady Hawks erupted for five runs and took the early advantage after two, 5-0.
In the fourth, Lafayette got on the board and cut the deficit down to three, 5-2.
Bottom fifth, Diseroad delivered a RBI-single to left field and drove in MacKenzie Brown (Bayonne, N.J.), 6-2. Top six, the Leopards responded with a three-run inning and trimmed UMES' lead down to one, 6-5.
Next inning, Lafayette's Brooke Wensel tied the contest on a sac fly to centerfield, 6-6; thus, forcing the game into extra innings.
Lafayette went empty in the top of the eight and gave UMES a chance to end the game. Maryland Eastern Shore would capitalize on the opportunity as the Leopards made two costly mistakes, including a throwing error to first that brought home the game-winning run.
In game two, the Lady Hawks were held to only five hits and stranded six runners on base. Sophomore Tesharra Hill (Chatsworth, Calif.) was the lone Hawk to record an extra base hit with a double.
After two scoreless innings to begin the game, UMBC struck first with back-to-back sac flies and took the early lead, 2-0. In the sixth, the Retrievers added two more runs to win, 4-0.
UMBC's Kelly Lane picked up the victory as she tossed a complete game, going seven innings with five hits and three strikeouts.
Next weekend (March 4-5), Maryland Eastern Shore returns to the Tar Heel State as they will take part in the Camel Stampede. UMES will meet Marshall and the host team, Campbell.
