ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team continued their spring break rodeo in Orangeburg, S.C. where they rallied in game two for a season split with the South Carolina State (SC State) Lady Bulldogs.
UMES (5-11) erased an early deficit to win, 14-7, and snapped an eight-game slide. SC State defeated Maryland Eastern Shore in the first game, 4-2.
In game two, nine Lady Hawks registered a hit while collecting a season-high 15 dingers overall. Senior outfielder Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) led the way, going 3-of-4 with two doubles and a career-high four runs scored. Freshman MacKenzie Brown (Bayonne, N.J.) and junior Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.) each registered three RBIs in the victory.
UMES got on the board first after sophomore Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) drove in Gomez, 1-0. South Carolina State responded and tied the contest after one on a wild pitch, 1-1.
In the third, SC State produced three runs and took their first lead of the game, 4-1.
Top four, the Lady Hawks chipped away at the deficit as freshman Sara Jo Whaley (Laurel, Del.) delivered a RBI-single up-the-middle, 4-2.
Next inning, UMES reclaimed the advantage on three Lady Bulldog errors and tallied three runs, 5-4. In the bottom half, SC State regained the lead with two runs in the fifth, 6-5.
In the sixth, Maryland Eastern Shore had one of their biggest innings of the season as they manufactured five runs; thus, taking back the lead, 10-6.
SC State's Jada Richardson drilled a shot over the left center field and trimmed the deficit, 10-7, but the Lady Hawks would generate another big inning in the seventh.
UMES recorded four runs on six hits, capped off by triples from Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Daeshia Jones (Teaneck, N.J.).
South Carolina State attempted one final rally, but sophomore hurdler Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) closed the door in relief as she picked up her third win on the season.
In game one, the Lady Hawks managed two runs on six hits. Senior Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.) posted her second multi-hit performance of the season, going 2-of-3 with two RBIs.
SC State's Jasmine Greer scored on a wild pitch and put the Lady Bulldogs on the board first after one, 1-0.
In the third, Diseroad delivered a two-run single to centerfield and gave UMES their first advantage of the contest, 2-1. In the bottom half, South Carolina State rallied and reclaimed the lead with a three-run inning; thus, winning by the final score, 4-2.
On March 17, Maryland Eastern Shore concludes it spring break rodeo in Durham, N.C. where the North Carolina Central Eagles await. First-pitch is set for 4 p.m.
