NC Central Uses Long Ball To Sweep Lady Hawks

DURHAM, N.C. - In their final tune-up before conference play, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team wrapped up their annual spring break rodeo with losses against the North Carolina Central (NC Central) Eagles.

NC Central (3-22) blanked the Lady Hawks in game one, 6-0, then used three dingers to down UMES in the nightcap, 13-4.

In game one, seniors Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) and Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) each collected two hits while sophomore Tesharra Hill (Chatsworth, Calif.) added another one.

NC Central's Jenny Tracy homered to left center and put the Eagles ahead after one, 1-0.

North Carolina Central put the contest away in the third as they tallied five runs, capped off by a three-run blast from Aleyah Evans; thus, making the final score, 6-0.

In the nightcap, UMES produced four runs on nine hits. Senior Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) and freshman Sara Jo Whaley (Laurel, Del.) each went a perfect 2-of-2 from the plate while driving in three Hawks total.

Gomez opened the game with a lead-off triple and gave Maryland Eastern Shore a runner in scoring position. With one away, Whaley delivered a RBI-single down the right field line to put UMES ahead after one, 1-0.

In the bottom half of the second, NC Central's Kayleigh Brueck drilled a two-run shot over left center and gave the Eagles their first lead of the contest, 2-1.

Maryland Eastern Shore responded with a three-run rally in the third and reclaimed the advantage, 4-2. North Carolina Central scored in the bottom half and trimmed UMES' lead down to one, 4-3.

After the Lady Hawks went scoreless in the fourth, NC Central erupted for eight runs with Dominique Wilson providing the biggest blow as she produced a grand slam, 11-4.

NC Central ended the game early in the fifth as Tracy delivered a two-run shot to centerfield; therefore, making the final result, 13-4.

This weekend (March 19-20), the Lady Hawks (5-13) host Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Contender Delaware State at Hawks Field. The three-game series starts with a doubleheader Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m. The series concludes with a seven-inning contest Sunday, March 20 at noon.
