March 2, 2016 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame announced its 2016 Class of seven inductees, and included on that list is Maryland State College alum Charlie Stukes.
Stukes, a 1967 graduate of Maryland State, played quarterback for the Hawks under the primary tutelage of Coach Sandy Gilliam. During his collegiate career he racked up 1,574 passing yards, the most of any football player in Hawk history, and set the single season passing touchdown record with nine in 1966.
Drafted in the fourth round by the Baltimore Colts in 1967, Stukes transitioned to defensive back where he captured 32 interceptions over seven seasons between the Colts and the Los Angeles Rams. He was a member of the Super Bowl V Championship team when the Colts defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 16-13.
Once retiring from football Stukes returned home to Chesapeake, Virginia where he served as an assistant principal at Oscar Smith High School. He remains on the staff today as an administrative assistant. Maryland Eastern Shore inducted him into their Athletics Hall of Fame back in 1982.
Stukes and the other six members of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2016 will be formally inducted at a banquet on April 30th inside the Renaissance Portsmouth-Norfolk Waterfront Hotel. The cost is $75 for VSHF members and $100 for non-members, or a table for eight for $600, beginning with a 5:30p.m. reception and a 6:00p.m. dinner and ceremony. Other events for the weekend include a Celebrity Golf Tournament, a VIP Reception on the 29th and an Inductee Autograph Session on the 30th.
