PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In the series finale, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team dropped their rubber match against Delaware State (DSU), 10-2, at Hawks Field.
Maryland Eastern Shore (6-15, 1-2 MEAC) produced 10 hits; however, stranded seven runners on the day. Sophomore Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) collected two hits, including her first-career homer, and two RBIs. Junior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and senior Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) also registered two hits in the loss.
After a scoreless opening inning, DSU's Khaliyah Flournory delivered a RBI-single and put the Lady Hornets on the board first, 1-0.
In the third, Delaware State's Vanessa Washington drilled a three-run blast over right-center and extended their lead, 4-0.
Casarez put UMES on the board in the fourth with a solo shot over the left field fence, 4-1, but the Lady Hornets answered with two runs in the top of the fifth, 6-1.
DSU's Nicole Brock hit a solo homer in the sixth to make the score 7-1, but the Lady Hawks responded in the bottom half with another Casarez RBI-single, 7-2.
In the seventh, Delaware State tallied three more runs and made the final score 10-2.
For DSU (9-13, 2-1 MEAC), they manufactured 10 runs on 13 hits. Washington led the way, going a perfect 2-of-2 with four RBIs, two runs scored, and a three-run blast.
On March 25-26, the Lady Hawks travel to Baltimore where they will face in-state rival Coppin State for a three-game series. Friday's doubleheader begins 1 p.m. and Saturday's seven-inning contest starts at noon.
