March 25, 2016 Box Score (Game 1) | Box Score (Game 2)
BALTIMORE - Sophomore pitcher Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) had an incredible day in the circle as she struck out 18 Eagles and guided the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team to a split at Coppin State (CSU).
Despite the Eagles' (1-16, 1-4 MEAC) late rally in game one, the California native sat down a season-high 10 batters. In the nightcap, she fanned eight more in relief and picked up the victory.
Senior Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) opened the series with a leadoff triple and put UMES in scoring position. Next up, junior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) delivered a RBI-single through the left side and gave the Lady Hawks an early advantage, 1-0.
In the sixth, Gomez collected her third hit in the game and stolen second to place a runner in scoring position. With one away, junior Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.) singled to centerfield and extended the lead, 2-0.
In CSU's final at-bat, they rallied to score three times to down the Lady Hawks, 3-2.
Gomez finished game one going a perfect 3-of-3 with two triples and two runs scored.
In game two, the Eagles' Alanna Williams scored the first run of the contest and put Coppin State ahead after one, 1-0.
In the third, UMES capitalized on a Coppin State mistake and scored twice to take their first lead, 2-1. Next inning, the Lady Hawks produced five runs on six hits and took a commanding lead, 7-1. In the bottom half of the inning, CSU's Melanie Benge drove in another run to make the final score 7-2.
Maryland Eastern Shore (7-16, 2-3 MEAC) racked up seven runs on 12 hits, led by Gomez and sophomore Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) each registering three hits.
Tomorrow's (March 26) rubber match begins at noon.
