BALTIMORE - In a vital rubber match at in-state rival Coppin State (CSU), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team was unable to win the season series as they dropped the rubber match against the Eagles, 4-1.
UMES (7-17, 2-4 MEAC) registered 10 hits; however, left 10 runners on base as well. Senior Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.) led the way as she went a perfect 3-of-3 from the plate. Fellow classmate Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) and sophomore Tesharra Hill (Chatsworth, Calif.) also collected two hit apiece in a losing effort.
Maryland Eastern Shore found themselves in a hole as CSU scored three times after one, 3-0. Coppin State pushed across another run in the third and extended the margin, 4-0.
In the top half of the fourth, UMES got on the board after a sac fly from junior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.), 4-1.
UMES had multiple opportunities throughout the contest, but the Eagles made continuous defensive plays to take the rubber match.
For Coppin State (2-16, 2-4 MEAC), seniors Shelby Mendoza and Danielle Smith each registered two hits in the victory.
On April 2-3, the Lady Hawks return to Princess Anne where the Norfolk State Spartans await. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. and Sunday's seven-inning game begins at noon.
