BUIES CREEK, N.C. - On day one of the Camel Stampede, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team went winless as they were defeated by Campbell and Marshall at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
UMES (4-6) dropped the opener versus Campbell, 8-0, then fell to The Herd, 11-0.
In game one, Maryland Eastern hung tough early on; however, could not get into a rhythm as sophomore Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) was the lone Hawk to register a hit.
Campbell's Amber Schisler blasted a solo shot over centerfield and gave the Camels the early advantage after one, 1-0. In the third, Campbell scored another run on a Hawk mistake, 2-0.
The next inning, Campbell added two more to extend the lead, 4-0. In the fifth, the Camels used the long ball to end the contest early as they tallied four runs on five hits to win, 8-0.
For Campbell (5-7), they recorded eight runs on 12 hits. Madison Casto went a perfect 3-of-3 and scored twice while Schisler, Chandler Patterson, and Caroline Smith each homered in the victory.
UMES scattered three hits in the nightcap against Campbell. Sophomore Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.), freshman Daeshia Jones (Teaneck, N.J.), and senior Abria Tinsley (Sewell, N.J.) each registered a single in the loss.
The Herd scored three runs in the first and second to take a commanding lead, 6-0. Marshall did not let up as they produced five more runs in the third, capped off by a solo shot from Racquel Escareno. Maryland Eastern Shore continued to battle, but The Herd were too much as they fell, 11-0.
For Marshall (7-7), they manufactured 11 runs on 13 dingers. Junior Morgan Zerkle led the charge, going 3-of-3 with a RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore Taylor McCord had a game-high three RBIs in the win.
Maryland Eastern Shore will square off against the same opponents tomorrow (March 5). UMES meets The Herd at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Camels at 8 p.m.
