BUIES CREEK, N.C. - After being blanked in both games yesterday, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team saw their bats come alive; however, it was not enough as they lost both contests at the Camel Stampede.
UMES (4-8) dropped the first game against Marshall, 11-4, then fell in the nightcap versus Campbell, 12-4. As a result, the Lady Hawks ended the weekend winless (0-4).
In their second encounter with The Herd, Maryland Eastern Shore produced four runs on seven hits. Seniors Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) and Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) each registered two dingers while sophomore Tesharra Hill (Chatsworth, Calif.) delivered a two-run shot in the fourth.
Marshall took the early advantage with two first-inning runs, 2-0, but the Lady Hawks would respond in the second.
Hill started the inning with a lead-off walk, then senior Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.) got on base due to being hit-by-pitch (HBP). Later in the inning, Gomez doubled to left field and tied the contest after two, 2-2.
Marshall regained the momentum with three runs in the third, but UMES refused to go away. In the fourth, sophomore Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) reached on an error and put the lead-off batter on base. Next up, Hill homered and trimmed the deficit down to one after four innings, 5-4.
Next inning, The Herd added a run with Samantha Loose's RBI-fielder's choice, 6-4. In the sixth, Marshall exploded for five runs on five hits; thus, ending any hope of a Hawk comeback, 11-4.
For The Herd (9-8), they tallied 11 runs on 14 hits. Kaelynn Greene and Morgan Zerkle each recorded three dingers while Briana Daiss posted four RBIs in the win.
In the nightcap, UMES managed four runs on six hits with junior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) collecting two of them. The Colorado native went 2-of-2 with a RBI and run scored.
After a scoreless first inning, the Camels erupted with eight runs in the second and took the commanding lead, 8-0. Maryland Eastern Shore answered in the third with three runs, capped off by a two-RBI single from Nash, 8-3.
In the bottom third, a three-run blast from Campbell's Amber Schisler grew the lead back to eight, 11-3.
Next inning, Anderson doubled down the leftfield line and scored Gomez to cut the deficit, 11-4.
In the fifth, Schisler homered to centerfield and made the final score, 12-4.
Campbell (6-8) manufactured 12 runs on 13 hits, led by Schisler. She finished the night going a perfect 4-of-4 with six RBIs, two runs scored, and two homers.
Maryland Eastern Shore will travel south for their annual Spring Break rodeo. First stop is Savannah, Ga. where they will face conference rival Savannah State in a doubleheader (March 13). First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
