RICHMOND, Kentucky - Sunday's finale in the Bluegrass State went the Colonels' way, who defeated the Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team by a score of 14-3. Eastern Kentucky (7-5) won the series three games to one and outscored the Hawks (4-7) by 45 runs.
"We had a tough weekend." Hawks coach John O'Neil remarked after Sunday's game. "It was great for our guys to have the comeback win in game three, but overall we were completely outplayed. Being outplayed all weekend falls completely on me for not having these young men prepared enough to battle a great opponent like EKU."
Like the other three losses over the past few days, the Colonels scored early and often, including six runs in the seventh inning. Sophomore starter Scott Bean (Harveys Lake, Pennsylvania) lasted a little longer in his second start this season, reaching the fifth inning, but he was saddled with the loss. The majority of runs given up by the relievers were unearned, as Maryland Eastern Shore committed three errors in the field.
On the offense, three Hawks-senior Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Maryland) and juniors Jordan Martin (Atlanta, Georgia) and Justin Somerville (New Windsor, Maryland)-collected two hits each. Sophomore Jessey Valdez (Dorchester, Massachusetts) plated home the team's lone RBI with a single in the sixth. The other two runs came when Somerville scored on an error in the sixth and freshman Joseph NiCastro (New Market, Maryland) stole home on a double steal in the fourth.
O'Neil says that the tough weekend provides some teachable moments for his squad going forward. "Our team will learn from this weekend and move on, continuing to get better as a team."
Maryland Eastern Shore will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Annapolis for a midweek game against the U.S. Naval Academy. First pitch is set for 2:00p.m. Wednesday.
