ANNAPOLIS, Maryland - Based largely on the excellent pitching and consistent offensive efforts of their opponents, the Hawks baseball team dropped its midweek game to Navy by a final of 11-2. The defeat drops Maryland Eastern Shore to 4-8 on the season, its fourth loss in five tries.
Despite the struggles, Hawks coach John O'Neil. "We are in a team slump right now. We are struggling in several areas of the game. Good teams get through struggles together, and we will get through it by continuing to work hard as a unit."
Sophomore Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Virginia), junior Dallas Culotta (Princess Anne, Maryland) and senior Connor Breslin (Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania) each collected a base hit, and senior Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Maryland) contributed the team's lone RBI on a fielder's choice.
On the mound, freshman Tom Summers (West Decatur, Pennsylvania) went three innings in his first collegiate start, surrendering three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
Navy got an efficient start from Colin Brady, who pitched six innings of two run ball. On offense, the Mids' leader in batting average, Robert Currie, collected three hits, drove in two and scored twice himself.
The Hawks did hold an early edge in the contest, thanks to Escanilla's fielder's choice. But the Mids struck back with a trio of runs in the second and another three in the fourth. Maryland Eastern Shore would score its second and final run when freshman Joseph NiCastro (New Market, Maryland) scored on a wild pitch in the sixth.
The team returns to the diamond this Friday in Lexington, Virginia when the Hawks challenge Virginia Military Institute in the first of a three game series.
