HAMPTON, Va. - Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team resumed conference play in Hampton, Va. where they were swept in a doubleheader against the Hampton (HU) Lady Pirates.

Hampton (14-24, 6-5 MEAC) rallied to win game one, 5-4, then the Lady Hawks (9-22, 2-7 MEAC) mounted a comeback of their own before falling in the nightcap, 5-3.

In game one, Maryland Eastern Shore was held hitless for the first five innings until they manufactured all five hits in the sixth. Five Lady Hawks produced a hit, led by Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) each registering a double.

In the first, Hampton's Hope Sobelewski belted a solo shot over left center and gave the Lady Pirates the early advantage, 1-0.

In the third, HU's Danielle Budden scored on a wild pitch and extended the lead, 2-0. Fifth inning, the Lady Pirates' Diamond Ponds also crossed home with a wild pitch, 3-0.

In the top of the sixth, UMES' bats came alive and broke up HU's Allie Hotetz no-hitter as they tallied four runs on five hits and took the lead, 4-3.

Hampton responded and scored twice in the bottom six, including the go-ahead sac fly from Hotetz. In the seventh, Hotetz sat down the next three Hawks; thus, giving the Lady Pirates a 5-4 victory.

In the nightcap, UMES posted three runs on eight hits. Sophomore Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) recorded her fourth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-of-3 with a RBI.

After three scoreless innings, HU's Kayla Deschepper delivered a two-run single to left center and put the Lady Pirates ahead, 2-0.

Next inning, Hampton's momentum continued as they produced three more runs and took a commanding 5-0 advantage.

In the sixth, Maryland Eastern Shore refused to go away as they made another comeback. UMES recorded three runs on three hits and pulled within two runs after six innings of play, 5-3.

UMES made one last push in the seventh as they had the tying run at home plate, but Hampton's Jada Fields closed the deal for the Lady Pirates.

Maryland Eastern Shore looks to avoid a series sweep tomorrow (April 17) at Lady Pirates Softball Stadium. First pitch is set for noon.
