BALTIMORE - In their series finale against Morgan State (MSU), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team held on to win, 4-2, at CSU Softball Field.
With the victory, Maryland Eastern Shore snapped a nine-game slide against their in-state rival, dating back to 2013.
Offensively, the Lady Hawks registered four runs on eight hits. Junior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and senior Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) each collected two hits in the win.
MSU's Audrianna Alvarez put the Lady Bears on the board first with a solo shot down the left field line, 1-0.
In the third, Maryland Eastern Shore tied the game after Anderson scored on an error, 1-1. Next inning, the Lady Hawks took their first lead of the game with Gomez's two-run double to left center, 3-1.
In the sixth, Morgan State trimmed the margin after Korynna Lara's RBI-single, 3-2, but the Lady Hawks answered in the bottom half.
Gomez opened the bottom sixth with a leadoff single to centerfield. Then, Anderson belted a shot to right center for a RBI-triple and made the final score 4-2.
Sophomore Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) earned her ninth victory in the circle, going seven innings and striking out a season-high 10 Lady Bears.
For Morgan State (12-25, 7-7 MEAC), they posted two runs on six hits. Lara and Kimber Salvas each went 2-of-3 in the loss.
Although Maryland Eastern Shore avoided the season sweep, they were eliminated from postseason contention due to Morgan State taking the season series, 2-1. UMES will miss the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament for the seventh consecutive season.
Tuesday, April 26, the Lady Hawks travel to the City of Brotherly Love where the Drexel Dragons await. The doubleheader action begins 2 p.m.
On April 30-May 1, Maryland Eastern Shore concludes the regular season with a home series against the Howard Lady Bison.
