BETHESDA, Maryland - The Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team went into a Big East venue Tuesday evening and did more than hold their own. Over two games the Hawks outscored the Hoyas 14-11 in a split. Georgetown took the first game, 7-5, but the players from Princess Anne rebounded with a 9-4 win in the nightcap.

Maryland Eastern Shore improves to 13-27 on the year, but they have also won four of the last six and are 8-9 during the month of April. The win for the Hawks is also the first over the Hoyas since 1994.

"Our young men earned a great team win over a very good Georgetown team." Head Coach John O'Neil said postgame. "Many guys stepped up tonight to impact the game and everyone did their job."

The Hawks' offense competed as one unit throughout the evening. Seven batters in the starting lineup collected hits in the first game and eight batters chipped in during the second. Junior Jordan Martin (Atlanta, Georgia) went 2-for-4 in the opener with a pair driven in, and senior Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Maryland) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI in the nightcap. Sophomores Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Virginia) and Isaiah Chambers (Bowie, Maryland) tallied three RBI's each during the doubleheader, as did Martin.

Senior J.P. Black (Elkton, Maryland) moved from behind the plate in game one to the mound in game two and didn't miss a beat. After getting a base hit and catching seven innings he pitched 6 1/3 innings to earn his second victory as a pitcher this year. Sophomore Jordan Turner (Baltimore, Maryland) earned his first save of his collegiate career with 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Despite the loss in the opening game the Hawks didn't take it easy on the Hoyas. Benefiting off three Georgetown errors the Hawks scored three times in the third, capped off with a double from Trower. The Hoyas would tie in the bottom half of the inning but Maryland Eastern Shore scored twice in the fifth with RBI's from Chambers and Martin.

But the Hoyas fought back in the fifth, scoring four runs on four hits to take the lead back. The Hawks were only able to manage two hits the rest of the way, giving Georgetown the win.

The second game did not start in the Hawks' favor either, as the Hoyas put up three runs in the bottom of the first. Undeterred the visitors came back with a vengeance in the second. Starting with a leadoff double from freshman Tom Summers (West Decatur, Pennsylvania), Maryland Eastern Shore sent 11 men to the plate. Chambers plated two with a double and four others players punched home one teammate each in a six run inning.

From there the Hawks never looked back, scoring three runs in the fourth. They cruised most of the way, with the exception of the seventh. Turner stepped in with the bases loaded and nobody out and only conceded one run. The Hawks' sophomore kept the Hoyas at bay during the last two innings to seal the win.

O'Neil believes the split will provide momentum heading into the home finale this weekend. "Our team gained a lot of confidence tonight. We are looking forward to playing the biggest series of the year this far versus Coppin."

The Hawks are battling Coppin State for the third and final spot out of the Northern Division for the MEAC Championships, and this weekend's games will be pivotal to determine that spot. Maryland Eastern Shore will play host for the three game set, which begins Saturday. Six seniors will be honored at 12:30p.m. prior to first pitch at one o'clock.
