PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- On a sunny, but chilly and windy day, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team dropped their Sunday contest versus Norfolk State (NSU), 14-4, at Hawks Field.
Maryland Eastern Shore (7-18, 2-5 MEAC) struggled in the field as they accumulated at least one error in all six innings of play. UMES finished with seven miscues on the day.
Offensively, the Lady Hawks produced only five hits. Senior Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) registered her 10th multi-hit game of the season, going 2-of-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a triple.
After a scoreless first inning, NSU's Megan Dunning scored on a passed ball and gave the Spartans the early edge, 1-0.
Next inning, Norfolk State added to their lead with three more runs and held a 4-0 advantage after three. NSU's momentum continued into the fourth as they capitalized on two UMES mistakes and increased the deficit, 7-0.
Gomez singled and stole second to open the bottom half of the fourth. With two away, senior Emily Diseroad walked and placed runners on first and second. Next up, sophomore Tesharra Hill (Chatsworth, Calif.) singled and put the Lady Hawks on the board, 7-1.
Norfolk State scored twice in the fifth and held a commanding 9-1 lead going into the bottom half of the inning. UMES refused to go away quietly as they tallied three runs, capped off by a two-run triple from Gomez, 9-4.
In the sixth, the Spartans displayed their power as they manufactured five runs on six hits to win by the final score 14-4.
For NSU (10-14, 5-2 MEAC), they collected 14 runs (nine earned) on 16 hits. Kayla McNair led the way, going 4-of-5 with three runs scored. Dunning recorded three hits and a game-high three RBIs in the victory.
On Wednesday (April 6), the Lady Hawks travel to Fairfax, Va. where they will meet George Mason in a nonconference doubleheader. First-pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
