April 8, 2016 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - On Thursday, April 7, Maryland Eastern Shore held its annual Honors Convocation, recognizing those student who excelled in the classroom during the Spring 2015 and Fall 2015 semesters and those counted among the hundreds of UMES scholars were 56 student-athletes.

Every athletic team was represented with at least two athletes, but the baseball team had the most players recognized with nine. The most from a Lady Hawk team came from women's track and field, who had eight.

Of the 56 student-athletes honored, more than 75-percent (44) received Departmental Distinction. Students who earned Departmental Distinction received a 3.7 grade-point-average (GPA) or higher, while those placed on the Dean's List achieved a 3.5 to 3.69 GPA.

Senior Ashley Smith, who played with the women's volleyball team, was recognized with Departmental Honors for the Department of Kinesiology. Departmental Honors is given to one individual in each major who best demonstrates five key points, including commitment to the mission and goals of UMES, ability to act as a role model, and a seriousness of purpose and work in earning a degree.

Baseball: nine honorees, eight with Departmental Distinction, three on Dean's List

Men's Basketball: three honorees, two with Departmental Distinction, one on Dean's List

Women's Basketball: six honorees, six with Departmental Distinction

Golf: five honorees, four with Departmental Distinction, one on Dean's List

Softball: four honorees, three with Departmental Distinction, two on Dean's List

Bowling: six honorees, five with Departmental Distinction, two on Dean's List

Men's Tennis: four honorees, three with Departmental Distinction and Dean's List

Women's Tennis: two honorees, both on Dean's List

Men's Track & Field: three honorees, one with Departmental Distinction, two on Dean's List

Women's Track & Field: eight honorees, five with Departmental Distinction, four on Dean's List

Volleyball: seven honorees, four with Departmental Distinction, three on Dean's List
