Vandals outlast Hawks over four sets

Sept. 10, 2016

PULLMAN, Washington- Facing a 2-0 deficit against the Idaho Vandals, the Hawks showed no signs of quitting. They battled to a fourth set, but could get no further, ultimately falling 3-1 (13-25, 21-25, 25-22, 21-25) to Idaho in a neutral site match at Washington State's Cougar Challenge.

Coupled with a loss earlier in the day against Washington State, the Hawks have now dropped two in a row to make their record 7-4. Idaho snaps a four game skid to improve to 4-4.

Senior Mere Serea (Suva, Fiji) and sophomore Lucia Babic (Sisak, Croatia) led the charge for The Shore. Babic led in kills with nine along with a .429 attack percentage and four block assists, a team high. Serea supplied seven kills against just two errors with three block assists and a dig. Libero Zuzana Ondruskova (Bilovec, Czech Republic) led with 11 digs, and junior Kirstin Fink (Tucson, Arizona) totaled 16 assists.

Idaho received 13 kills from Kaela Straw and Torrin Crawford successfully converted two-thirds of her attacks.

After letting the first set get away from them, the Hawks struck back with a vengeance. Kills by freshman Iva Vujosevic (Bar, Montenegro) and sophomore Rachel Kayongo (Northridge, California) helped The Shore to a 6-1 lead. Slowly but surely, however, the Vandals climbed back into the set and took the lead at 11-10. The Hawks would hold a couple of one point leads later on, but Idaho hung on to take the set by four points.

Both teams played close in the third set early before Maryland Eastern Shore sprung ahead. Whenever the Vandals would pull close, the Hawks would respond. Several players would deliver kills at crucial junctions, and freshman Ivana Blazevic (Zagreb, Croatia) punched an attack home to give The Shore its first set point. A brief Vandals rally was stopped by a sharp attack from Kayongo to force a fourth set.

Idaho would storm to the lead to start the fourth, but the Hawks countered back to keep their hopes alive. The score would stay level until the 18-18 mark when the Vandals took charge to finish off Maryland Eastern Shore's comeback attempt. A 7-3 run was what it took to end the match.

Maryland Eastern Shore wraps us their stay in the Evergreen State with a 1 p.m. Eastern match against George Washington.
