SMYRNA, Delaware- Winning has been no stranger to the Maryland Eastern Shore cross country team this season, and this past Saturday was no exception. The men's and women's team swept a meet for the second time this season with their first place performances at the DSU Farm Run Invite.
Once again the Hawks were led by men's junior Khalil Rmidi Kinini (Malaga, Spain) and women's freshman Sharon Jerop (Nairobi, Kenya), who each took home individual victories. Rmidi Kinini earned a time of 25:50.8 to win the 8k while Jerop took first with a time of 19:09.0 in the 5k.
Both teams placed four runners in the top five. Senior Mark Blackmon (Charlotte, North Carolina) finished with a time of 26:27.1, taking the runner up spot. Juniors Stanley Meli (Eldoret, Kenya) and Donovan Mundy (Jacksonville, Florida) ran times of 26:40.2 and 26:43.6, respectively, to finish third and fourth.
On the women's side, senior Jennaya Hield (Freeport, Bahamas) earned a time of 19:37.9 to place second. After a Hampton runner took third, The Shore got fourth and fifth place finishes from freshmen Neus Quinonero (Valencia, Spain) and Silva Guerra (Barcelona, Spain). Quinonero took fourth with a time of 19:53.6 while Guerra's time of 19:54.2 rounded out the top five.
An eighth place time of 27:15.3 from sophomore Jordan Leon (Baltimore, Maryland) and an 18th place time of 21:34.0 from junior Dypna Umunakwe (Bronx, New York) completed the scoring for each team.
As a team the women earned 30 points to win, while the men earned first with 16 points.
The Hawks head to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for the Paul Short Run on October 1st.
