BALTIMORE - After nearly two weeks away from play, Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Softball team earned a split with in-state foe UMBC (7-15) at the Retriever Classic.
The Shore (2-8) picked up their second win of the season in game one with a shutout, 3-0, but were blanked in game two, 5-0.
Junior pitcher Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) tossed a complete-game shutout while striking out a season-high eight Retrievers. The California native also picked up her first win of the season.
After three scoreless innings, senior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) delivered a RBI-double to left center and put the Hawks ahead, 1-0.
In the sixth, junior Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) and newcomer Tori Jo Brown (Front Royal, Va.) each drove in a run and gave Eastern Shore a 3-0 lead.
Guerra would capitalize and keep the Retrievers off the board throughout the contest.
In the nightcap, Maryland Eastern Shore manufactured five hits; however, were unable to get anyone to cross home.
After taking an early lead, 1-0, the Retrievers' Carly Lesko grounded out to second to score Tori Alexander; thus, putting UMBC ahead 2-0.
UMBC put the contest out of reach, scoring three times in the sixth to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Retrievers.
On March 18-19, The Shore opens league play in Dover, Del. where they will meet route 13 rival Delaware State in a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. while Sunday's seven-inning contest starts at noon.
