PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland - Senior Jordan Wesley (Mitchellville, Maryland) came thru with three clutch RBI's and freshman pitcher Wesley Martin (Westminster, Maryland) fired seven strong innings as the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks defeated the Coppin State Eagles, 6-3, in the 2017 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener.

"These young men are playing well right now." Hawks coach Charlie Goens said. "We are getting good pitching and great defense with clutch hitting. Offensively the guys are putting back-to-back hits together and making good adjustments at the plate."

Wesley was one of three Hawks who had a multi-hit game, along with juniors Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin) and Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Virginia). Trower and senior Justin Somerville (New Windsor, Maryland) also delivered RBI singles in the victory.

After Martin's outing, junior Evan Bertone (Douglas, Massachusetts) struck out three Eagles to earn his first save.

Coppin State got on the board first with a RBI single and a wild pitch to score a pair during the top of the second inning. Maryland Eastern Shore responded with one in the bottom half of the second to cut the deficit in half.

The Hawks took the lead for good with a five spot in the fourth. After sophomores Ryan Rotondo (Warwick, Rhode Island) and Dominic DeBlasie (Tilton, New Hampshire) reached base, Trower hit home Rotondo to tie the score. Two batters later Wesley stroked a two RBI single to give the home team the lead, 4-2, and Somerville's single later in the inning brought home another pair of runs.

The Eagles would score in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, but the Hawks' pitchers held them in check the rest of the way.

For Coppin State, Nazier McIlwain went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Eastern Shore and Coppin wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
