EMMITSBURG, Maryland- Looking to turn their fortunes around, Maryland Eastern Shore saw an opportunity against Mount St. Mary's. But the Mount-who were also hoping for a change in fortune-managed to outlast the Hawks in a doubleheader sweep. The Mountaineers took game one in eleven innings, then took the second game 2-0.
The Shore's pitching staff was exceptional, allowing just four earned runs across 18 innings, but were trumped by The Mount's pitchers, who held the Hawks to seven hits and just one run for the afternoon.
Sophomore Ryan Rotondo (Warwick, Rhode Island) contributed three hits in the doubleheader and junior Dallas Culotta (Princess Anne, Maryland) broke up a potential no-hitter in the 7th inning of game one.
The first game was a pitchers' duel until both teams worked to muster up some late inning heroics. There were several junctions where The Mount looked to take a lead, but effective work on the rubber by starting freshman Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey) and junior relievers Toby Hoskins (North East, Maryland) and Chris Melrath (Rising Sun, Maryland) kept the Mountaineers at bay.
Maryland Eastern Shore was the first team to put a run on the board, when junior Isaiah Chambers (Bowie, Maryland) punched in an RBI single up the middle to score fellow junior Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin). But their opportunity to seal a victory came up short with Mount St. Mary's delivered an RBI single of their own to knot the score again, 1-1.
The contest would go 11 innings before the Mountaineers delivered the game winner-another RBI single just inside fair territory down the left field line.
In the evening matchup both starters were locked in a battle of wits again. Junior Evan Bertone (Douglas, Massachusetts) was efficient for the first three innings, and freshman Bryan Liriano (Rockville, Maryland) kept the Mountaineers off the board in the fourth. However in the fifth, The Mount would push a run across thanks to a sacrifice fly.
From there, the Mount St. Mary's starter Zach Call took over, shutting out the Hawks for the remaining two innings to seal a doubleheader sweep. Call held The Shore to just three hits in the seven inning affair.
Maryland Eastern Shore heads home for a three game series with Delaware State. Both Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's game begins at noon.
