ANNAPOLIS, Maryland - Maryland Eastern Shore built up a 4-1 lead in Annapolis on Wednesday, but the Naval Academy Midshipmen stormed back in the middle innings to defeat the Hawks by a 17-5 score. The loss drops the Hawks to 0-10 on the season, while the Midshipmen improve to 4-7.
Senior Jordan Wesley (Mitchellville, Maryland), junior Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Virginia) and sophomore Ryan Rotondo (Warwick, Rhode Island) tallied multiple hits in the contest. Trower along with junior Dallas Culotta (Princess Anne, Maryland) and senior Jordan Martin (Atlanta, Georgia) collected RBI's.
On the mound, freshman Marty Tolson, Jr. (Stafford, Virginia) started and was effective over two innings of work. Tolson rebounded from four free passes by inducing two double plays. Junior reliever Evan Bertone (Douglas, Massachusetts) struck out three over one and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.
The Shore put up most of their runs early, getting on the board in the first inning with Trower's single to score Rotondo. Navy countered with a run in the bottom half of the first, but the Hawks punched home three in the top of the second. Culotta doubled home Wesley to start the scoring, then he would score on an error for the second run. Martin then capped off the inning with a steal of home.
That lead would hold until the fifth inning when Navy was able to break through. The Midshipmen scored five times in the fifth, four times in the sixth and six times in the seventh on the way to victory.
The Hawks will head back to Princess Anne for the 2017 home opener, a three game series versus Iona. A possibility of inclement weather moves the series up, beginning with a 3 p.m. game on Friday and a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
