PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland - Another fine pitching performance by the Hawks was spoiled by an equally impressive effort from Delaware State. Maryland Eastern Shore fell by a 2-0 score, with a one out, two run double by the Hornets in the eighth proving the difference.
Freshman Wesley Martin (Westminster, Maryland) turned in another spectacular performance in a hard luck loss, pitching into the eighth and allowing just four hits, an earned run and four strikeouts. Junior Chris Melrath (Rising Sun, Maryland) struck out two of the five batters he faced in relief.
Delaware State surrendered just four hits to The Shore. Junior Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin), sophomore Ryan Rotondo (Warwick, Rhode Island) and seniors Jordan Wesley (Mitchellville, Maryland) and Jordan Martin (Atlanta, Georgia) all tallied hits on the day.
For the Hornets, Lane DeLeon, Terry Godfrey and Darien Ragins combined for the shutout. Godfrey earned his second win on the season and Ragins picked up his fourth save.
Both pitchers were efficient thru the first seven innings, with the Hornets and Hawks earning just five total hits. After the Hawks left a runner stranded on third in the seventh, the Hornets used two singles and a sacrifice bunt to put pressure in the eighth. Darnell Maisonet stepped up to the plate and delivered the game winning double.
The Hawks were able to put runners on in the eighth and ninth, but the Hornets ended both innings on strikeouts to claim victory.
Delaware State improves to 8-12 (4-3 MEAC) while the Hawks fall to 3-21 (1-6 MEAC).
Maryland Eastern Shore will host Delaware State in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon. The Hawks will show their solidarity with the Vs. Cancer foundation throughout and after the games.
