NORFOLK, Virginia - The Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team will have to wait one more day to try and snap their current losing streak to the Norfolk State Spartans, who defeated the Hawks 8-2 Friday at Marty L. Miller Field. With the loss The Shore falls to 7-25 (5-8 MEAC) on the year.
Senior Jordan Martin (Atlanta, Georgia) led the Hawks' offense going 2-for-5 on the day with an RBI, and sophomore Ryan Rotondo (Warwick, Rhode Island) added an RBI single.
On the mound, freshman Wesley Martin (Westminster, Maryland) gave up five runs over six innings, taking the loss (3-3). Junior Evan Bertone (Douglas, Massachusetts) earned a strikeout over two innings of relief.
Norfolk State received a great start from pitcher Devin Hemmerich, who struck out 12 Hawks over seven shutout innings. Brian Beard and Alex Mauricio each contributed three hits for the Spartans, who improved to 16-14 (10-3 MEAC).
The Spartans took control of the game early with a pair of runs in the first and third innings. But The Shore managed a gutsy ninth inning rally despite an eight run deficit. Senior Justin Somerville (New Windsor, Maryland) led off with a walk and junior Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin) doubled to put him and Somerville in scoring position. Both runners would score would score on the RBI's by Jordan Martin and Rotondo before Norfolk State could retire the Hawks to complete the game.
The series concludes Saturday with a doubleheader. A 1 p.m. first pitch is scheduled.
