DOVER, Delaware - Maryland Eastern Shore hoped to use Sunday's doubleheader to climb back into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division standings. Instead, Delaware State swept the doubleheader and the series, creating a tougher road for the Hawks during the final two weeks of the season.
With losses of 7-4 and 9-0 at the hands of the Hornets, Maryland Eastern Shore fell to 8-30 (5-13 MEAC).
Seniors Jordan Martin (Atlanta, Georgia) and Justin Somerville (New Windsor, Maryland) lead the offense with three hits each. Somerville earned all three of his hits in game one, which included an RBI.
On the mound, sophomore Zach Mills (Parksley, Virginia) turned in a gutsy 5 1/3 innings, three run start while junior Evan Bertone (Douglas, Massachusetts) and freshman Steven Cook (Westminster, Maryland) registered scoreless relief appearances.
The opening game was a pitcher's duel early on, and in fact it was the Hawks who got on the board first with Somerville's RBI single that scored junior Isaiah Chambers (Bowie, Maryland). But the Hornets responded with four unanswered over the next two innings to seal the win. The Shore was able to make things interesting in the ninth with a two run rally.
In the seven inning finale, Delaware State led wire-to-wire as three Hornet pitchers combined on a six hit shutout. Although a first inning Hornet run would prove to be the difference, the home team poured on eight more runs in the late innings to dissuade any Hawk comeback attempt.
The Hawks will travel for a midweek doubleheader against Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on Wednesday before returning to MEAC play at Coppin State next weekend.
