BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA - Maryland Eastern Shore baseball fought valiantly against another bunch of Hawks from Lehigh University. However, the Mountain Hawks were able to defend their home nest, sweeping Wednesday's doubleheader by scores of 10-4 and 12-6.
The Shore's record moves to 8-32 on the season.
At the plate the Hawks found plenty of success, batting .299 as a team. Senior Justin Somerville (New Windsor, Maryland) led the way with four base hits-including a three hit performance in the nightcap. Five Hawks delivered multi-hit performances in one game or the other.
On the mound, freshman Steven Cook (Westminster, Maryland) was effective in his first start since March 5th, going three and giving up just a single run. Fellow freshmen Andre Bell (Detroit, Michigan) and Caleb Walston (Princess Anne, Maryland) turned in scoreless relief appearances.
Lehigh led the whole way in the first game, busting out of the gate to score five runs in the second inning, and adding four more in the fourth to put the game out of reach. The Hawks managed to make a small rally towards the end of the contest, with an RBI from junior Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Virginia) in the fifth and a 2-RBI double from Martin in the sixth.
In the second game, both teams battled back and forth, and it was The Shore who got the early edge with a four spot in the first inning. Lehigh slowly and surely worked their way back into the ballgame, pulling within one by the fourth inning. Senior Jordan Wesley (Mitchellville, Maryland) punched home two more Eastern Shore runs with his second triple of the year, extending the lead to 6-3.
But after Wesley's achievement, the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh would go on to score nine runs unanswered, sealing the victory with a grand slam by Connor Donovan in the seventh.
Maryland Eastern Shore returns to MEAC play this weekend against Coppin State. There will be a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday in Baltimore.
